Updated Workshop: Exploring the Mind’s Mysteries
Join us on February 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for a captivating workshop with Pete Flagg, inspired by the groundbreaking book The Memory Illusion: Remembering, Forgetting, and the Science of False Memory by Dr. Julia Shaw.
Key Points for the 2 hour CACHE workshop based on “The Memory Illusion” by Dr. Julia Shaw
Presented by Pete Flagg RCH
· Among the important assertions by Dr. Shaw impacting hypnotherapy practices and strategies are:
o Nearly all (Dr. Shaw suggests ALL) of our memories (of events) are inaccurate to one extent or another and are not “true” representations of actual events. “…always likely be some doubt as to whether any memory is entirely accurate…”
o “False memories” can fall into two categories:
§ Source confusion – the confusion of the sources of memories
§ “Confabulation” – essentially remembering events (that have impacted the narrative or identify of the” client”) which never took place.
o “Hypnosis” in Dr. Shaw’s view, may not actually be “a thing”. I.e., Dr. Shaw maintains at least an ambivalence if not outright skepticism that “hypnosis” may exist. This will be explored with discussion between the workshop participants.
o However, Dr. Shaw suggests that human beings are very “suggestible” and that suggestions from external sources can impact and modify our beliefs about ourselves, other people, the world around us and can impact and modify our memories of events that help shape our belief about “who we are”.
o These assertions will be explored in the workshop to help hypnotherapists and our clients with understand their internal narratives and to strengthen and support our practice.
· Meditation Exercises:
Pete will lead workshop participants through three guided meditations during the workshop to help explore our own memories and how those memories may have arisen from a confusion of sources or outright confabulation, to build and support our own internal narratives. We will also explore the impact of external suggestions on our own identities, memories and belief frameworks.
The intent of the mediations and follow-up discussions are to provide fellow hypnotherapists with insights as to how our clients’ memories impact their beliefs, and how our suggestions can help to positively impact our clients internal narratives.
